We have been very busy in our new art room!
Students in grades K-8 have been observing and learning about artists and sculptors who create art pieces that look like actual foods. Students are working with a variety of different mediums to create realistic looking food that we see in our everyday lives. This fun project is a step in teaching realism – art that is a realistic representation without imagination or idealization.
We have been discussing how subjects like certain foods can create emotion (smell, hunger) and memory (family gardens, ethnic foods, holiday meals).
Reese loves to make German Lebkuchen cookies with her mom at Christmas time. Anytime Reese smells the scent of the cinnamon cookies and the delicious lemon frosting it brings back memories of her great grandmother and the Christmas family tradition of baking the Lebkuchen cookies each season.
Hudson is reminded of spending time with his family whenever he sees turkey and gravy. It always brings back memories of all the amazing Thanksgiving Day meals his mom prepared for him and his family. Turkey dinners will always make Hudson think of his family, comfort foods, and all his incredible blessings.
