A Message From Mrs. Gilbert & Mrs. Paterson
We are off to a great start in preschool! We managed to get a lot done despite it being a short week. In all the classes, we went over rules, our schedule, and the calendar. Our social/emotional curriculum, called Second Step, will be the same each week for all preschoolers. Our first week discussed “Welcoming”, which involved learning to introduce ourselves when we meet someone new, using our right hand to shake hands, and looking each other in the eyes. We practiced this technique with our teachers and fellow students. It was a great way to introduce ourselves to one another and learn each others' names.
Our Terrific 3’s only had one day of school this week, but we are off to a great start! We sang some welcome songs to learn each others' names, discussed our Bible lesson (Jesus, my Good Shepherd), and read the book The Kissing Hand. The book is about Chester, the raccoon, who is hesitant and scared to go to school, but his mom reassures him it will be okay. She kisses him on the hand and tells him every time he is scared, to look at his hand and remember that his mom is with him. We made a fun handprint craft to go along with the book, so be looking for those coming home in their backpacks!
Our Fantastic 4’s had a wonderful time this week, getting familiar with the classroom and their new friends. We discussed our Bible lesson (Jesus calls us to be his disciples), along with name games and an introduction to writing our names. We read Only One You, which is about a little fish named Adri, who is eager to explore the world around him. His mother and father give him wisdom, comfort, and guidance along the way. We made our own fish this week, so be on the lookout for those coming home! We also read a book entitled Have You Filled a Bucket Today? which discusses being kind, using nice words, being a good friend, etc. Being kind not only fills up someone else’s imaginary bucket, but fills up our own bucket too! We completed a sorting activity about being able to spot “bucket filler” and “bucket dipper” qualities. You will find this activity in their backpacks as well.
Our Fabulous 5’s hit the ground running this week! We discussed our bible lesson (Jesus changes lives), sang some introductory songs, and read a book called Chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum is a student who is made fun of because of her name and is a funny story about teasing, self-esteem, and acceptance. We made a craft about the book, so be looking for that coming home. We made our Jesus, Jesus, Who Do You See? pages that will be made into a book. This book will be passed around and each student will have a chance to bring it home and share it with their family.
Reminders – Next Friday, August 24th from 5–7 pm is our annual Splash Bash! Splash Bash is our fun back-to-school carnival with awesome attractions including: a rock climbing wall, carnival games with prizes, bungee trampolines (x4 this year!), a castle play center, an obstacle course, a dunk tank, and more. We hope to see you there!
What a wonderful first week of school! We are excited to see everyone again next week!
